Description
Nos. 8 and 10 Lower Bridge Street is a shop and accommodation building, now used for storage, constructed in 1886 by E.A. Ould on the site of a small shop and cottage. The building features painted brick and timber framing with plaster panels, topped by a grey slate roof that runs parallel to the front. It is two storeys high.
The shopfront includes a small-pane recessed central door beneath a timber Tudor arch, flanked by Tudor-arched shop windows on either side. There are brick end-piers with stone and brick corbels supporting the jetty. The second storey displays small framing with herringbone braces and features two 6-light mullioned and leaded casements. The front has two gables, with roofs that rest against the main roof, showcasing small framing with a row of quadrant-braced panels and herringbone bracing above. A shaped chimney made of brown brick is positioned behind the ridge.
At the back, there are two adjoining rear wings that lack any notable features. Inside, there is no known cellar, and the first storey does not have any visible features of special interest. However, the second storey reveals the former Row walk archway made of sandstone from The Falcon Inn, a corner flue in the southeast corner of the middle north room, and a king-post truss.
Historically, the plan and elevation for this property, located between the Falcon Cocoa House and the White Bear Inn, were approved by the Chester City Council on June 4, 1886.
