Description

Lea Newbold Farmhouse is a farmhouse built around 1880 by John Douglas for the 1st Duke of Westminster, with some early 20th-century additions. It is constructed of orange brick in English garden wall bond, features a red tile roof, and has three brick chimneys. The design reflects a mid-17th century style with an irregular plan and varied masses. The west front is three stories high and has three bays. It includes a chamfered plinth and sawtooth bonds at the first and second floors. The left end bay projects under an ornately shaped gable with a finial. There is a corbelled arcade over a semi-circular headed light on the ground floor, with pairs of 2-light casements in glazing bars above and a 4-light window in the gable. The central bay has an added timber-framed porch and similar windows above under a shaped gable, while the right end bay has a single light. The south front features another ornate gable with strip pilasters, and the north front has a low staircase tower topped with a pyramidal roof. The interior is very plain and has lost much of its original detail. The massing of the building in a Dutch Jacobean style is reminiscent of Douglas's design for Aldford Hall.
