Description

Hall's Lock, also known as Canal Lock number 49, is a pair of narrow locks located on the Trent and Mersey Canal in Church Lawton. The towpath side lock was constructed by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall around 1772 to 1775, while the off-side lock was likely added by Thomas Telford in the early 1830s. Both locks have undergone some replacement of materials and movable parts over the years.

The towpath side lock features a concrete facing on most of its chamber and coping, while the off-side lock has a brick chamber with stone coping and quoins. There is a central island cutwater between the two locks. The late 20th-century gates include a single wooden top gate and double wooden bottom gates for the off-side lock. A wooden plank footbridge spans across each tail of the locks.

Steps lead down to the lower level at the off-side, with concrete steps on the towpath side and engineering brick steps on the off-side. There is also an off-side weir with stone walls. The Trent and Mersey Canal was built between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall. Hall's Lock is listed for its group value with the adjacent bridge.
