Description

Hall's Bridge, also known as Bridge Number 137, is a canal accommodation bridge located on the Trent and Mersey Canal. The east span dates from the early 19th century, while the west span was added or the bridge was remodelled around the early 1830s, likely by the engineer Thomas Telford. The bridge is constructed of red and brindled brick with stone coping and dressings, and features a towpath on the west span. It is integral to an adjoining pair of locks. Both spans have elliptical arches, with swept wings or roving arms on the south elevation and the west side of the north elevation. There is a central pier on the south side. The east span includes stone or stone slab quoins to the arch, while the west span has stone quoins and voussoirs. A stone string course and plaque are present at the crown of both arches on either side. The bridge has undergone minor repairs. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall, with subsequent alterations made over the years.
