Description

White Howe is a house built in 1901 by Walter Aston for Richard Harding Watt. It is constructed of roughcast render with a red pantiled roof and is designed in an Italianate style. The house has an irregular plan, loosely forming a main range with flanking towers to the front. The principal rooms are located to the rear, overlooking the garden, with an entrance hall and staircase at the front and service areas to the north.

The exterior is two storeys high. The entrance is in a high, lean-to porch on the side wall, to the left of the central range. To the right of the porch is a tall window with mullions, transoms, and leaded lights, with a single window above it. A heavy square tower is located to the left of the entrance, featuring arcading to the ground floor over small windows, a blind upper storey, and arcaded windows in the upper stage. The roof has a hipped overhang supported by brackets. A further tower is situated to the right of the central range, with a two-light window on the ground floor and pilasters forming an arcade between small windows in the upper stage. The garden front is raised above battered terracing. It features a tower with paired 12-pane sash windows on each floor and triple arcaded windows with a continuous stone sill on the upper stage. There are French doors in a round-arched recess in the centre. A full-height projecting bow is situated to the left, with triple windows on each floor. A projecting stack with a Mediterranean-style parapet is on the left-hand gable, with another stack breaking through the roof to the left of the bow.

The interior has not been inspected. White Howe is one of a series of buildings erected in Legh Road and was commissioned by Richard Harding Watt.
