Description

Lake House is a house built in 1902 by Richard Harding Watt, showcasing the Edwardian Free style. The exterior features roughcast walls painted white, with painted stone dressings and a pantiled roof. The design consists of a series of blocks with a tower facing the garden, connected by two additional blocks that contain the main rooms, with a porch situated at the angle of the two wings.

The house has three storeys. The porch has a segmental plan with a door and a pedimented window above, topped by a stepped parapet. To the right of the doorway is a three-light window, while the left side has an irregular arrangement of one and two-light windows. The street-facing elevation includes a two-storey bow window with an inscription above a narrow first-floor light. The main block to the left of the doorway features heavy lintels or pediments over the ground-floor windows, which are all two-light. The upper windows are arranged in one and two-light configurations.

Beyond this block is a basement storey with a round-arched doorway and paired windows that have a continuous stone lintel. Above, there is a balcony at the angle with the round tower. The flat roof has an irregular stepped parapet, with a mix of projecting blocks and cornice work. The tower has a rusticated and battered basement storey, with windows grouped in threes above and in pairs on the second stage. The upper stages feature irregular fenestration, including some blind windows, and a chunky three-light mullioned and transomed oriel window in the upper storey, supported by heavy blocks. The irregular parapet includes some pierced arcading and incorporates a chimney.

The interior has not been inspected. Lake House is part of a notable series of Edwardian Free Style buildings on Legh Road, commissioned by Richard Harding Watt, which includes The Old Croft.
