Description

Brae Cottage is a house dated 1898, designed by Paul Ogden for Henry Royce. It is constructed of brick with stone dressings and some timberwork, with a stone-flagged roof. The irregular plan features a central entrance flanked by asymmetrical gables.

The left-hand gabled wing contains a full-height canted bay window with two-light mullioned and transomed windows on each face, and paired traceried windows to a conservatory contained under a continuous swept roof. An asymmetrical rear gable to this wing has a six-light mullioned window projecting as a squared bay beyond the gable. The central entrance is in a porch with a round-arched doorway and a flat roof with balustrading. A four-light mullioned and transomed full-height stair window is in the gable to the right of the doorway. The apex of this gable is dated with the initials “HR” in a cartouche and topped with coped ball finials. A brick and mock-timbered service wing is set off to the right; this was a later addition, originally forming a larger wing that was largely demolished around 1917. Axial stacks are present.

Inside, the large entrance hall features wall panelling and a plaster-panelled ceiling in a 17th-century style. Similar plasterwork is found in other principal rooms, along with two original fireplaces.
