Description
The building is a synagogue, primarily constructed between 1916 and 1926, with later additions and alterations in 1955 and 1976. A dedication inscription on the front reads "BLACKPOOL UNITED HEBREW SYNAGOGUE 5676 ERECTED 1926". The architect was Alderman R.B. Mather, J.P. The synagogue is built of red brick with ashlar dressings, and has pantile and lead roofs.
The main range is oriented with its gable end to the front, featuring a round-arched, coped parapet behind which rises a small octagonal dome. The architectural style is Byzantine. The facade is a single tall storey, articulated externally as two storeys and three bays, with a lower two-storey entrance range to the right. Full-height pilaster strips are positioned off-set to the angles, with pilaster strips between the upper stage windows. These pilasters extend above the parapet. A chequered band runs between the two stages. The upper stage windows are round-arched, set within quoined surrounds with voussoirs to the head and keystones. The central three-light mullion and transom windows feature circular lights in a straight-headed surround with a frieze and cornice, topped with a plaque. The lower stage has three-light windows, with blind openings in the breakforward. A further range to the right of the main block has a central entrance with double, glazed doors and a casement window to the upper stage.
The left return side originally had seven bays, with a three-bay extension. It features pilaster strips on five bays and windows on six bays, which are primarily round-arched thermal windows in the upper stage, with two straight-headed, three-light windows towards the left. A simplified Venetian window with an arch and cornice is also present. The lower stage has two- and three-light straight-headed windows, each with a frieze and cornice. An entrance is located in the end bay of the original range, accessed through double doors.
The interior features a barrel vaulted roof with chamfered ribs and a balcony on three sides with a panelled balustrade surmounted by open x-work. Pews remain on both the ground floor and the balcony. Mahogany panelling to the front wall includes an open pediment on Ionic columns, with Doric columns to an inner, round-arched niche. An octagonal reading desk is present. A central reading desk was introduced circa the 1960s. The synagogue forms a notable group with The Old Grammar School, Raikes Parade. Stained glass depicting scenes from the Torah is present throughout the building.
