Description

Coral Bingo and Social Club, originally a picture theatre, was built in 1913. It is constructed from Accrington brick with stone-coloured dressings and has a rectangular plan. The building is single-storey but features a barrel-vaulted roof that gives a semicircular section to the two-storey facade. The ground floor has been altered or concealed. The upper facade is symmetrical, with a central pedimented gable of crude form, flanked by three-sided banded pilasters. Between the pilasters is a Venetian window, which is now blocked, and above it is a panel filled with the lettering "CENTRAL PICTURE THEATRE" along with foliated patterns in moulded terracotta. The gable is boldly chequered in red and white, with the date "1913" at the apex. There are large bullseye windows with archivolts on each side of the central bay, and banded pilasters topped with octagonal drums and ball finials at each corner. Inside, there is a small foyer with a decorated cornice featuring swags, and an auditorium with a balcony. The auditorium has a moulded cornice with egg-and-dart decoration, ceiling braces with moulding of crossed straps and interposed leaves and flowers, and seating banks with end-panels that have moulded garlands. The projection room is likely original, while the paybox has been altered.
