Description
Walkers Hill Farmhouse and attached barn and shippon is a late 18th-century farmhouse built of cobbles with some brickwork, originally thatched, but now with corrugated iron roofing. The barn and shippon have slate and corrugated asbestos roofs. The original plan consisted of a house with a parlour/kitchen and two small service rooms, attached to a barn and shippon which were likely built around 1800.
The two-storey farmhouse features a regular two-window front with a doorway to the left, and all windows have Yorkshire sash windows. The rear has two ground-floor windows. The barn has large waggon doors and a door leading to the shippon, with the rear projecting beyond the line of the house. The shippon roof is partially collapsed.
The interior retains remarkably intact fittings and plan, including a flag floor, two shallow-chamfered ceiling beams with original joists, and a brick baffle partition. A cast iron fire surround with decorative panels and paterae remains, along with a Victorian range by Hallmark & Gill of Blackpool. A winder stair leads to the rear, and the service rooms are divided by an axial partition along with simple sunken panel doors with strap hinges throughout. The first floor retains its early low partitions and planked doors with strap hinges. The roof has side purlins and a ridge piece. The house is divided by a full-height partition. This farmhouse represents a rare survival of an 18th-century cobble-built structure and is the only one surviving in the Blackpool District.
