Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a church built in 1878 and extended in 1894-1895 by architect R.K. Freeman. The east end with transepts was constructed first as an extension to the original church from 1836. It features yellow stone with red stone dressings and slate roofs, designed in a free style of Decorated Gothic. The structure includes a nave and chancel under one roof, a north-west tower, and transepts.
The tower consists of five stages, with light angle-buttresses and triplets of two-light belfry louvres, topped with a battlemented parapet and a canted stair turret at the third stage, which has a pyramidal roof covered in red tiles. The nave is very high, and the transepts have two gables. The west front showcases angle-buttresses, a large traceried window, and blind arcading in the gable. The nave, which has three bays, features pilaster buttresses and transomed two-light windows, while the transepts are adorned with very high four-light windows that have curvilinear tracery in their heads.
Inside, the church has a single vessel up to the chancel arch, with a very high nave arcade that lacks capitals, extending across the transepts. It is separated from the outer walls by small strainer arches that define aisle passages, along with short tunnel cross-vaults. The pointed wooden tunnel roof is supported by ornate hammerbeams shaped like angels. The south transept contains good stained glass windows made by Shrigley and Hunt of Lancaster.
