Description
Monkton Farmhouse is a house, formerly a farmhouse, built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed of ashlar sandstone with a Welsh slate roof and a repaired brick gable. The building has two storeys and features three windows. The central entrance has an 8-panelled door set within a Tuscan stone doorcase. The sash windows are in raised surrounds and have rusticated lintels that mimic voussoirs. The east gable includes two high narrow windows, and there is a rear off-shot that has been raised to two storeys. An end brick chimney is present.
Inside, the staircase has a dogleg design, which includes a local characteristic of diminishing balusters at the turn, with two turned balusters per tread. A historical note mentions a re-used lintel-stone above the door, which bears the inscription 'RFA' '1740' alongside the arms of the Cock family. Richard and Ann Forster were tenants and occupiers of the farmhouse in 1740.
