Description

The Thornaby War Memorial, located off Acklam Road in Thornaby, is a Grade II listed monument commemorating the First World War, with later additions for the Second World War. Constructed in 1921, the memorial was erected by public subscription and unveiled by Colonel Spence, preceded by a parade of Durham Light Infantry units, dignitaries, and bands.

The memorial is a substantial cenotaph built from Portland stone, with granite panels, and stands within a metal enclosure. It features corner buttresses carved into acanthus leaves, and each side has a carved laurel in relief surrounding a cross. A large rectangular block tops the structure, bearing a carved stone sarcophagus. Inscriptions on the memorial read as follows: the west face bears the words ‘THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED / BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION / IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF / THE MEN OF THORNABY-ON-TEES / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914-1918’ followed by a list of names and the phrase ‘THESE ARE THE NAMES THAT MUST NOT WITHER’; the east face displays names and the words ‘THEY ANSWERED THEIR COUNTRY'S CALL’; the north face displays names and the inscription ‘GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS’; and the south face displays names and the phrase ‘IS IT NOTHING TO ALL THEE THAT PASS BY’.

The memorial is enclosed by a metal gate with the words "LEST WE FORGET" above the round-headed gateway. In recent years, polished granite panels have been added to accommodate additional names, including those of members of the Merchant Marine. The memorial is designated at Grade II for being an eloquent witness to the impact of tragic world events on the community, and for the high quality of its materials, design, and sculptural detailing.
