Description

The Ship Public House is a building that originated as a house in the late 18th century and later served as fishermen's cottages before becoming a public house. It is located in Old Saltburn and features a painted plinth and walls. The house is constructed from herringbone tooled coursed squared stone, while the cottages are rendered. The roof is made of slate, with some ridges in terracotta and painted chimneys.

The exterior consists of two storeys with a three-window range. The house has a central six-panel door, although the lintel is obscured by a signboard. It features four-pane sash windows with slightly projecting painted stone sills on both floors, flanking and above the door. The roof has painted stone gable coping and end chimneys with plinths and cornices.

Cottage (i) has two low storeys and a two-window range, with a renewed door in the return of a square projecting porch that has windows on the left, a central sash, and a right three-light window, all of which have been renewed, with the right window having a boarded fascia. Above, there are three windows: a low sash at the eaves over the porch, and gabled dormers breaking the eaves at the centre and right, both with four-pane sashes. The low-pitched roof has a single tall chimney stack behind the porch. Cottage (ii) features a late 20th-century wide bay window.

The Ship Public House is part of the original fishing settlement of Old Saltburn. The interior retains 19th-century bar fittings in the public bar, while the lounge was refitted in the late 20th century.
