Description

Ship House is a house that now serves as a Heritage Centre, local authority tourist information centre, and exhibition space. It was built in the mid to late 18th century, with an early 19th-century extension. The building was converted in the 20th century. The exterior features rendered walls, a main building with a pantiled roof and terracotta ridge, and rendered and painted chimneys, while the extension has a Welsh slate roof and a painted chimney.

The house is two storeys tall with a two-window range and a lower section with one window. The main building has a renewed boarded door to the right of centre and renewed three-light windows, with the ground floor windows almost flush with the wall and the first-floor windows set under the eaves with tile sills. The right window on the first floor is shorter and wider. The steeply pitched roof has painted end chimneys, with the right chimney made of brick and the left raised in brick. The lower left extension features a renewed boarded door on the right and two-light windows almost flush with the wall, along with a low-pitched roof that has a chimney at the left end.

Inside, there was a staircase that formerly rose from a small entrance hall, but this has now been removed. A room to the left of the entrance contains many joists and a beam approximately one meter in front of the fireplace. The upper floor is not accessible except through a private flat over the adjacent public house, but it can be seen from a ceiling hatch in the tourism office and is in a derelict condition. Ship House is part of the original fishing settlement of Saltburn.
