Description

This is a headstone dating from 1709, located 10 metres west of the south aisle of the Church of St. Peter in Bywell. It is made of sandstone and features a swept segmental top. The relief carving includes a naturalistic death's head with a scallop shell and drapery above, and a book with a self-swallowing serpent and a scythe below. The inscription commemorates Thomas Maxnil and other members of the Maxnil family, with additional text on the reverse. The craftsmanship is noted for its unusually high quality for the period.
