Description

This group of cottages, located in a long narrow yard leading to number 58J, dates from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century. They are situated along the north side of the yard. Number 58C is constructed of stretcher bond brick, while the two adjacent cottages are made of freestone ashlar with dressed quoins and framed openings. All the cottages feature pantiled, pitched roofs with gable end stacks and are connected to form a continuous terrace.

Number 58C is two storeys high with three bays and has a central bay with a four-panelled door beneath a segmented lintel. The windows throughout are 4-pane vertical sashes in wooden frames, also with segmental lintels. There is a raised course or floor-band between the stories. The two adjacent houses have identical two-storey, three-bay symmetrical facades, each with a central door in a plain square wooden frame. The middle house retains its original 16-pane, hornless vertical sashes with projecting cills and monolith flat lintels. The end house features original glazing on the ground floor and a recessed moulded original door with a moulded lintel in plain stone surrounds, while the upper windows have been altered to horned 4-pane sashes. The interiors have not been inspected. This group has historical significance and value in relation to the adjacent listed houses on Church Street and number 58J at the end of the yard.
