Description
This is a headstone located 2.5 metres south of the south-east angle of the nave of the Church of St. Peter in Bywell. It dates from 1793 and is made of sandstone. The headstone features a shaped top with a decorative moulded and beaded border. It has relief carvings that include a cherub with a scallop shell above, a self-swallowing serpent over a scythe, a recumbent hourglass, and a death's head below, all surrounded by floral ornamentation. The inscription reads, "The Burial Place of Jos. Green of Whittestell (Whittonstall)" and indicates the burial of Jane Green in 1793. The craftsmanship is of good quality.
