Watts And English Headstone 8 Metres South Of St Cuthbert'S Church Hall

The Watts and English headstones, located 8 metres south of St. Cuthbert's Church Hall, date from the 18th and early 19th centuries and are made of sandstone. The southern headstone features a relief-carved panel that includes an anchor with an arrow and scythe, surrounded by a cable-moulded border and flanked by sailing ships on billows, along with the heads of drowning persons. The inscription commemorates William Watts of South Blyth, a pilot who drowned on January 14, 1805, along with three other pilots while performing his duties. It expresses his family's grief and includes a poignant message about finding peace in the afterlife. The northern headstone has a shaped top adorned with carvings of a rustic cherub above a book and hourglass, and it is inscribed to Jane, the daughter of Thomas English, a surgeon, dating to around 1764. The right edge of this stone is damaged, but it is included for its group value.
