Description

Gunnergate Farmhouse and farm cottage, located on Gunnergate Lane in Middlesbrough, date from the mid to late 18th century, with the entrance front refaced in the early 19th century. There are also mid to late 19th century outhouses and a left extension to the cottage. The buildings are constructed of dressed sandstone and feature a mid-20th century Gaelic clay tile roof with stone gable copings. The outhouses are made of brick and pantile.

The farmhouse is two storeys tall with three windows, while the cottage to the left has one window. The farmhouse has a central boarded door with an overlight, set within a double-keyed architrave. It features mid-20th century casement windows in early 19th century keyed openings, complete with sill bands. Above the door, there is a blind window that holds a partly-renewed wooden sundial inscribed with "David Appleton 1772". The farm cottage has a late 20th century door on the right in an early 19th century opening, and similar windows. Both buildings have corniced ridge and end stacks.

Adjoining the ends are one-storey pent outhouses and a lean-to extension of the cottage. The left return of the cottage includes a renewed horizontal sash window and two boarded garret lights. At the rear of the farmhouse, there is a central boarded door in a Victorian wood pilaster-and-entablature surround, along with a quasi-Venetian stair window with glazing bars at the left end. Late 20th century front porches and a porch at the rear of the cottage are not considered of special interest.
