Description
Church House is a vicarage built around 1879 by John Norton in Middlesbrough. It has been converted into flats and is constructed of brick with sandstone and polychrome brick dressings. The building features Welsh slate roofs adorned with decorative clay ridge crestings. It is two storeys high with two bays and a one-bay canted projecting cross-wing on the left side, which is accessed from the left return. The windows are cusped-headed sash windows, arranged in pairs in the cross-wing and narrower middle bay, and in groups of three in the right bay. The ground floor includes transoms and relieving arches. The roof has half-hipped half-dormers with scrolled metal finials above the middle and right bays, and a two-span design with a half-hipped right end and a half-pyramidal roof on the cross-wing. All roofs have sprocketed eaves, a corniced transverse ridge, and rebuilt stacks at the left end. The left return of the cross-wing has three windows, a door with an overlight in a pointed opening, and paired sash windows. There is a two-storey rear service wing. At the time of the resurvey, the building was unoccupied. A mid-20th century garage adjoining the right end and a former church hall at the rear are not considered of special interest. The building is included for its group value.
