Description
The monument to Sir Samuel Sadler, located in Victoria Square, Middlesbrough, was erected in 1913. It was designed by Professor Edward Lanteri, with G. Hart as the mason and A.B. Burton as the founder. The monument features a polished Peterhead granite pedestal, steps, walls, and piers. Atop the pedestal is a signed bronze statue of a standing male figure dressed in court costume and mayoral robes.
The south face of the pedestal displays the achievement of arms of Middlesbrough Corporation, along with a tablet featuring raised lettering that reads: "SIR SAMUEL ALEXANDER SADLER, KNIGHT V.D. 1842-1911". The pedestal is elevated on two steps, with the upper step being chamfered. The monument is partly enclosed on the north side by a low crescent-plan wall with curved-topped copings, which ends in short piers topped with shallow pyramidal caps. These piers also have tablets with raised lettering on their south faces.
