Description
This building is a former pumphouse, now serving as a public shelter, constructed in 1879 for Mr. Ward of Neasham, as noted on a plaque on the rear wall. It features a curved rear wall made of engineering brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone ashlar responds and a pink marble column. The roof is covered with plain clay tiles. The structure has a triangular plan with two open sides, a column positioned at an angle, and a curved rear wall. The squat column has a carved stone capital and stands on a tall shaped base, with chamfered semi-octagonal responds. Moulded wood beams span the open sides, and the steeply-pitched roof is hipped over the open sides, becoming semi-conical above the rear wall, topped with a terracotta finial. Inside, there is a carved stone plaque featuring a shield, the monogram SRW (for S.R. Ward), and the inscription "POSUIT 1879." The roof includes radiating tie beams with a pendant at the crossing.
