Description
The commemorative column, designed by G G Hoskins in 1874, is in the Gothic style and was constructed by contractor Robert Borrowdale. Made of sandstone with granite plaques, the column is octagonal and stands on a square plinth and base.
Located at the intersection of the cruciform paths in North Cemetery, it features a square, double-chamfered base that supports a square plinth with folded chamfered shoulders, topped by a blind Gothic arcade with pointed-arched moulded recesses on all sides. Three of these recesses contain inscriptions in black lettering on granite panels. Above the plinth, a moulded cornice leads to the tapering octagonal column, which is detailed with a Gothic arcade that includes triangular and round-lobed forms at the lower sections. The column itself is a straight, eight-sided structure with a moulded base and capital, along with an intermediary moulded band. It is crowned by an octagonal, truncated cone finial featuring triangular detailing.
The south face of the column bears the inscription: "CEMETERY COMMITTEE" followed by nine names, including three members of the Pease family, Theodore Fry, and the committee chairman Alderman Edward Kipling. The north face reads: "THE FOUNDATION STONE THE CHAPELS WAS LAID BY ARTHUR PEASE, ESQ. MAYOR ON THE 8TH DAY OF APRIL 1874. THEY WERE OPENED FOR PUBLIC USE AD 1877. G G HOSKINS F.R.I.B.A ARCHITECT. ROBERT BORROWDALE/BATES AND CUTLER. CONTRACTORS."
