Description
Nos 1 and 2 McNay Street are former Railway Goods Agents’ Offices, built around 1840 for the Stockton & Darlington Railway, and are part of the railway’s North Road Station complex. The building is two storeys high and has three bays, constructed from coursed freestone with raised quoins and a first-floor band. The roof is hipped, slated, and has a moderate pitch, featuring a central chimney stack made of stone ashlar with a cornice. The sash windows have glazing bars, are recessed, and are set within raised stone surrounds. The central door, located on the north elevation facing the Grade II* Listed Goods Station, is framed by a similar stone surround and consists of six panels with an oblong fanlight above. The building is included partly for its group value and historical connections to the pioneering railway.
