Description
No. 3 Great Gates is a house that now serves as the rear premises of a shop on Newgate Street. It was built around 1800 and features thin courses of squared stone with painted ashlar dressings. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has stone gable copings. The building is two storeys high and has two windows.
There is an internal step up to a central six-panel door, which is topped by a plain overlight within a stone surround that includes narrow pilasters and a simple entablature, complete with a bracketed hood. The ground-floor windows have painted flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills, while the first-floor windows are sashes with glazing bars. The eaves are supported by gutter brackets. The low-pitched roof has end brick chimneys and stone gable copings resting on moulded kneelers.
