Description
The war memorial, located 3.0 metres north of the Midland Bank in Shildon, commemorates those who died in the First and Second World Wars. Erected in 1920, it features a statue by Humphries, Jackson of Manchester. The memorial consists of a pink granite plinth and a sandstone pedestal adorned with bronze plaques and a bronze statue. The rectangular plinth has a moulded top, while the tall pedestal has set-back, hollow-chamfered arrises with broaches and a stepped, battered top. The front of the pedestal displays a bronze laurel wreath, and the sides and rear have plaques listing the names of the fallen. Atop the pedestal is a life-sized statue of a kneeling World War I infantryman holding a fixed bayonet.
