Description
Abbey Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Tees, built in 1773 for John Sawrey Morritt. The bridge is primarily constructed of dressed sandstone, with some lower courses made of rubble. It features a semicircular arch that spans 23 meters, supported by slightly projecting giant piers. The bridge has a battlemented parapet above a chamfered band, which breaks forward over the piers to create pedestrian refuges. There are paired water-spouts that project from the base of the parapet at both the north and south ends of the bridge. The merlons and embrasures of the parapet have chamfered coping, and the north-west section of the parapet is terminated by a low circular-plan pier topped with a hemispherical cap. Additionally, there are two circular emplacements at the southern end of the parapet, believed to be the bases of former toll-houses. Abbey Bridge spans the parishes of Westwick and Egglestone Abbey.
