Description
Cutlers' Hall is a house and cottage that was later subdivided into two houses. It dates from 1787, as indicated by the plaque over the door that reads "CUTLERS HALL." The building is constructed of coursed squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof and brick chimneys. It has two storeys with four windows, and there is a one-storey, one-bay extension on the right.
The front features paired 20th-century boarded doors inserted in the second bay under a concrete lintel, flanked by a central rough stone pier and irregular outer jambs. Above the doors, the stone plaque displays the date and name in Roman capitals. To the left of the fourth bay, there is a similar door in a stone surround. The three left bays have 16-pane sash windows with tooled stone surrounds, while the fourth bay and the right extension feature 3-light casements with flat stone lintels and projecting stone sills. The main block has three ridge chimneys, and there is one at the right end of the extension.
Historically, the building was constructed for the Oleys, a family known for swordmaking in Shotley Bridge.
