Description
The stables located to the rear of Number 40 on Front Street in Tanfield date from the early 19th century. They are constructed from sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and quoins, topped with a pantiled roof that features stone gable coping and a rendered chimney. The building has two low storeys and consists of six bays. The third bay includes an elliptical carriage arch with alternate-block jambs and voussoirs. Flanking this arch are a boarded door and a Dutch door, both with flat stone lintels and similar jambs. The other bays contain small fixed lights with glazing bars, including a fixed light at the eaves above the Dutch door. The roof features a chimney at the right end, and the right return of the building has four pigeon holes arranged in a square at the peak of the gable.
