Description

Tanfield Hall is a house from the 17th century that was refronted in the mid-18th century. It is built of coursed squared sandstone with ashlar dressings and quoins, while part of the rear wing is made of brick. The roof is covered with graduated Lakeland slates, with part of the rear wing roof finished in Welsh slate. The building has an L-shaped plan and consists of three storeys with five bays.

The central entrance features a four-panel door with a three-pane overlight, all set within a raised stone surround that has a cornice. The ground and first floors have raised stone surrounds with moulded sills for the sash windows, which have broad glazing bars. The second floor features two-light horizontal sliding sashes. The roof has gables that project above the slates, and there are two ashlar corniced end chimneys on projecting stacks.

On the left side of the building, there are small chamfered single lights on each floor to the right of the stack, along with a wooden porch and a sash window with glazing bars. The two-storey, two-bay wing has a renewed stone mullioned-and-transomed three-light window, with a blocked two-light chamfered stone-mullioned window above it. There is also a further brick two-storey, two-bay section that includes a boarded door and a horizontal sliding sash under wide oak lintels, topped with a steeply-pitched roof and a large square projecting gable stack with offsets. The interior has not been inspected.
