Description
This public drinking fountain, located 30 metres south-east of the entrance to the Recreation Ground, was built in 1914 by Hill and Smith Ltd. of Brierley Hill, Staffordshire. It features an octagonal stone plinth with a cast-iron canopy and a tapering, cylindrical fountain that includes a bowl. The structure is supported by eight slender, ribbed columns with shaped bases and foliage capitals, which hold up an octagonal, pierced, arcaded drum and cupola. The drum is adorned with eight roundels, positioned between dragon's heads, each depicting a railway locomotive designed by Timothy Hackworth. One roundel on the west side is inscribed: "PRESENTED TO THE INHABITANTS OF SHILDON BY THE MEMBERS OF THE OLD SHILDON WORKMEN'S CLUB. NOVEMBER 1914."
