Description

Numbers 3 and 4 Old Engine Houses are a semi-detached pair of railway workers’ houses built in the mid-1820s for the Stockton & Darlington Railway. They are constructed from tooled and squared local sandstone laid in courses, with a Welsh slate roof. The east gable features a rebuilt brick chimney stack, while the west gable has a stone stack.

Originally designed as a single room deep with single-storey rear outshuts, the plan has been reconfigured, and these outshuts were raised to two storeys in the late 20th century.

The front (north) elevation consists of four bays, with the western bay being wider. The second bay from the east is shared between the two properties, and both front doors are located in this bay. The first-floor window is divided into two sections by a central mullion. The façade features slightly projecting, well-dressed rusticated quoining at the corners and around all door and window openings, with monolithic lintels and slightly projecting sills. The gables are coped and have ridge stacks. Windows are horned two-over-two pane sashes, and the single mullioned window resembles a pair of narrower horned sashes. At the first floor level on the west end of the elevation, there is a black and white ceramic plaque from the Stockton & Darlington Railway marked H1 in white on a black shield.

At the rear (south), the original single-storey outshuts have been raised to two storeys beneath a flat roof with a low parapet. Each end features a single-storey, single-bayed, gabled extension with slate roofs, built in stone to match the original structure.

The surrounding area is designated as a scheduled monument.
