Description
The Tithe Barn is a large rectangular barn, built with small random rubble walling that is entirely limewashed, and it has a natural slate roof that was renewed in 2003-2004. The barn features a gable end facing Monk Street, which includes a large modern opening with plank doors and a circular window above. The long walls of the barn are notably out of alignment. The wall facing the church has three barn doorways with oak lintels and plank doors, along with four lines of pigeon holes that have perching ledges and four circular windows at the eaves. The roof is hipped over the entire structure. The opposite long wall has a central barn doorway and six other openings of varying sizes. The rear gable wall also contains more lines of pigeon holes and a central circular window.
Inside, the barn is currently being converted into a multi-purpose hall, with a modern first floor added in part of the space. The roof structure consists of a ten bay tie beam and queen strut design that has undergone significant repairs. It features three tiers of through purlins, a ridge piece, and closely set secondary rafters.
