Description
The Small Barn at Newhouse Farm is a 17th-century structure built from rubble stone with a slate roof. The doorways leading to the threshing floor have been narrowed, and a broad window opening has been added on the downhill side. The southwest gable is supported by a high battered plinth.
The barn consists of four bays, with a modern loft above the northeast bay. The interior wall of the southwest gable is faced with 20th-century blockwork. The main feature of this building is the three surviving cruck trusses: the two trusses on the downhill side are upper crucks, possibly modified from full crucks, while the uphill end features a raised full cruck. The southwest truss includes a tenoned collar, notched spurs, and a saddle that supports a diagonal-set ridge beam. The middle truss is supported by a raised beam and has a long saddle with a kingpost that carries the ridge. The northeast truss is a raised full cruck set on a high plinth, with a secondary lower tie-beam that supports the joists of the modern loft.
