Description
Penrhiwceiber Institute and Community Hall is an entertainment hall built in a modest Gothic Revival style. The front features scored render on a plinth of rockfaced stone, with window and door surrounds made of ashlar. The main storey on the side is constructed of painted brick, while the basement is of rockfaced stone. The roof is made of Welsh slate and has a part-hipped design with moulded eaves and ventilators.
The main street frontage is highlighted by a hipped roofed projection box that extends out at the first floor level, featuring side bay windows topped with lead roofs. The gable above is cut off to create a parapet adorned with end finials and a central stepped datestone. The ground floor includes a central round-arched doorway set within a gabled and buttressed surround, which features a dedication stone at the base and an apex finial above, along with panelled double doors. Flanking the doorway are tri-partite cross-framed windows with segmental-arched heads. On the side, there is a range of four tri-partite cross-framed windows with square heads on the hall floor, and smaller mullioned basement windows with segmental-arched brick heads. The glazing within the stone frames has been renewed.
Inside, the hall is open with raked seats at the rear and a proscenium arch and stage at the front. The ceiling is boarded and painted, featuring recesses for ventilators. The proscenium arch is a three-centred design with fluted end pilasters, rising from a cornice that has a scrolled pediment motif at the apex. The panelled wings on either side have pedimented doorways. The rear has tip-up seats, and there are swing doors leading to lower floor meeting rooms.
