Description
The Shah Jalal Islamic Cultural Centre, originally a Methodist Chapel, is a former chapel built in an eclectic Art-Nouveau style. It features a basement hall due to the steep drop in the ground behind the entrance. The building is constructed from Pennant stone, with Bath stone and yellow brick dressings, topped with a slate roof.
An elaborate shaped gable adorns the structure, complete with ball finials and an oculus near the apex. A large arched window showcases shaped radial keystones. Flanking the front are D-plan stair turrets, each topped with a concave pavilion roof and an iron ball finial. The upper levels of these turrets are faced in Bath stone and feature seven round-headed windows, while three stepped windows are located below. The slate roof extends down over the porch, which has a very broad three-centred arch. The camber-headed entrance doorway is flanked by small windows, with additional doorways to the stair turrets on each side at right angles. Stub walls to the porch support iron railings.
In front of the chapel, there is a forecourt wall made of Pennant stone and Bath stone, with iron railings and gates. Access to the chapel is provided via a stone bridge over the basement area. The five-bay side elevations are characterized by shallow brick buttresses, round-arched windows on the upper level, and camber-headed windows on the ground floor. The basement is constructed of brick and features camber-headed windows.
