Description
Hermon Chapel is a Classical-style chapel dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of coursed rock-faced stone with a slate roof. Windows have margin glazing and stone sills on corbels. The three-bay front features round-headed windows with prominent keystones. The central doorway is accessed by double panelled doors under a round-headed overlight, flanked by foundation tablets and paired windows. Upper-level windows are defined by a sill band. A triple-stepped window sits above the doorway, with the central light being wider and higher, and single windows are located in the flanking outer bays. The pedimented gable has a plain ashlar band for the cornice and incorporates an inscription shield displaying the building's name and date. A pair of openings with vents are situated beneath the apex. The left-hand side wall is roughcast.
The main chapel occupies three bays and contains two tiers of margin-lit sash windows, with segmental heads below and round heads above. The central bay is wider and features triple windows. A three-window vestry adjoins the chapel to the right. This has a central doorway with double panelled doors under a radially-glazed overlight, alongside segmental-headed windows with wooden mullions on either side. Three similar mullioned windows under round heads are located at the upper level of the vestry. The rear elevation has three windows, pebble dashed and featuring segmental-headed windows at the lower level and round-headed windows above. The right-hand side wall is similar to the left.
The vestibule includes a coloured glass panel opposite the main door and a floor of decorative tiles. Panelled doors lead into the main chapel, which features a boarded and ribbed ceiling with two central ceiling roses, framed by marginal panels with fretwork and boarding, and a cornice incorporating an egg and dart frieze. A three-sided raked gallery is supported by cast iron columns with foliage capitals, and has a front consisting of panels with diagonal boarding. The pews have moulded ends. The set fawr has a panelled back below a frieze of balusters, and the panelled pulpit is flanked by stairs with turned balusters and newels, leading to panelled doors providing access to the vestry. The organ is positioned within a recess framed by pilasters with moulded panels and paterae, above the pulpit. Behind the organ is a two-storey vestry and school room.
