Description
The boundary wall of Bethel Chapel, facing Bethel Road, features four gateways made of axe-dressed uncoursed masonry. It includes a return wall at the front of the chapel terrace, which has railings on a low plinth wall on either side of a flight of steps. Railings also flank a curving path that leads from the main street gates to the steps and are positioned at each side of the steps. The gate piers and other wall piers are constructed from rock-faced ashlar masonry with cornice copings. A small return section of railings to the west completes the design.
Each gate is designed as a pair and consists of full-height square bars that penetrate three full-width flat rails without swellings, along with additional short bars (dog railings) at the bottom. Each gate features a central motif panel with a formalised art-nouveau design of riveted scrolls, and two short horizontal bars on each side at lock level. The rails are riveted to the hinge and lock bars, which terminate in scrolls, while the other bars end in square points. The main gate piers also have an arched lantern overthrow adorned with decorative scrolls, and cast-iron lamp holders are mounted on the piers at the top of the stairs.
The ordinary railings that protect the chapel terrace and line the path and steps consist of square-pointed bars of varying heights, supported by a bottom rail and a top rail, with braced standards at intervals.
