Description

Stable court at Abercamlais is a 19th-century structure made of whitewashed rubble stone with slate roofs, hipped at the outer southeast angle. It consists of three lofted ranges of equal height: a barn to the east, lofted stables to the north, and lofted cart-sheds and coach-houses to the south.

The barn features two full-height openings, one to the left of center and one at the extreme right, along with two long loops on either side of the center. The northern range has four large square loft openings located under the eaves, above four doors with timber lintels. Each door has a square window to the left, also with a timber lintel, while the third and fourth windows are in blocked doorways. There is a tall door with an overlight at the extreme right angle. The left gable end is made of rubble stone and includes inserted garage doors with stone voussoirs.

The southern range has four square shuttered loft lights on the left half and two shorter ones on the right, all with heads under the eaves. The left loft lights are positioned above a window and door to the left, both with timber lintels, and there are three elliptical-arched cart entries with stone voussoirs. There is one window to the right with a timber lintel, and two of the cart entries are part-blocked. The right section features two coach entries with higher double doors that are flat-headed with curved upper angles, also with stone voussoirs. The loft windows are not aligned but are each to the left of a coach entry. Outside steps on the rubble stone west wall lead to a loft door with stone voussoirs and a similar arched head.

On the south wall, there is a broad ogee-headed ground floor window to the left, featuring grey stone voussoirs and four-light timber glazing with a transom. The wall has four shuttered loft windows that are irregularly spaced. The east wall has opposed barn doors, while the north wall is windowless, with some timber lintels set into the walling.

Inside, the barn has an 8-bay roof supported by tie-beam and collar trusses, most of which have been altered and bolted.
