Description
Nos. 6 and 7 Forge Row are a pair of single-storey cottages featuring dormers. No. 7, on the left, has a roughcast facade divided into three bays, with a central door and a window on each side, all of which are 20th century. The small window openings likely reflect their original size. The steep roof is covered with artificial slate, and the eaves are interrupted by two 20th-century dormer windows with catslide roofs. There is a brick gable chimney on the left and a 20th-century rear lean-to extension.
No. 6, on the right, has a painted rendered facade that is similar in length to No. 8. This facade has been remodelled in the 20th century, featuring a door on the left and a wide window on the right. The roof is covered with concrete tiles, and the eaves are also broken by two 20th-century dormers with low-pitch sloping roofs. There is a rendered gable chimney on the right and a large 20th-century flat-roofed rear extension.
Reconstructing the original plan-form of both cottages is challenging, but it is noted that the attics were habitable, as indicated by the presence of chimney stairs. The length of both cottages suggests that the ground floor likely included a secondary room on each side of the party wall, which was unheated.
The interior of No. 6 features a main room on the ground floor with rough stop-chamfered beams. There is an altered fireplace with a modified fireplace stair to the left. The roof contains a single oak truss without a collar and massive paired purlins. The interior of No. 7 has not been seen but is reported to be modernised.
