Description

Cynghordy Hall is a country house, largely dating from a substantial remodelling in the late 19th century, with evidence of earlier fabric incorporated into its design. The house is roughcast with slate hipped roofs, featuring paired brackets to the eaves and tall stacks, though the number of stacks has been reduced over time. The main front is two storeys high with a five-window arrangement, dominated by a large, projecting hipped-roofed centrepiece. A tall roughcast stack sits on the left end, and a stone stack is located to the right of the centre on the roof slope. The window spacing is uneven, and the centre projection is slightly left of centre. A chamfered Tudor-arched entry is positioned slightly left of centre, suggesting the porch may incorporate older building elements. A later 19th-century door replaces the original. Side walls of the porch have narrow sash windows. The first floor of the main range has 18-pane sashes to the left of centre and 12-pane sashes to the right, while the ground floor windows are all full-height 19th-century sashes with marginal bars. A former matching hipped-roofed block on the right-hand side has been demolished, likely in the 1880s. A 20th-century lean-to garage is present, and a hipped projection to the right contains two windows above and one below. On the left end wall are 18-pane sash windows on both floors, alongside a lower-roofed range that extends to the left, featuring 18-pane sashes on each floor; the ground floor window on the left has been replaced with plastic after a fire. The rear elevation features three parallel, hipped-roofed ranges, with the range on the right set back and having a windowless wall. The central range contains the staircase and a large, late 19th-century five-light stair-window with top-lights, and a five-light window under the eaves. To the right of these windows is a single first-floor 12-pane sash. The left-hand range's roof has a short ridge and a stone stack on the upper roof slope, along with two first-floor windows on the right, one not aligned below.

The house has a stone-flagged porch. Inside, a broad centre hall leads to a stair hall, with the division marked by a panelled and boarded lower ceiling on brackets, replacing a likely former hall arch. The staircase is broad, with two flights and a wide landing at the half-level, featuring turned balusters and ball-finial newels. Panelling is present on the walls. The left drawing-room retains remnants of early 19th-century detailing, including reeded doorcases, panelled doors, and arches on the right side wall. A deep-panelled plaster ceiling displays late 19th-century detail but may obscure earlier 17th-century work. An adjacent room has a late 19th-century timber ceiling. Thick internal walls by the hall suggest an earlier house was enlarged. The dining-room features a panelled ceiling designed as a surround to a mid- to late 19th-century painted centrepiece depicting cherubs, with surrounding panels exhibiting stencil work and painted birds. A plaster cornice with undercut bosses is also present, and the fireplace includes a piece of 17th-century panelling as an overmantel.
