Description
The outbuilding located to the north of The Cloister Hall is a significant structure with a history likely dating back to the 18th century. It features rough barrel vault construction, which probably consists of three vaults in line beneath both the house and the outbuilding. There are two parallel vaults immediately behind the house, and the configuration under the high raised platform extending towards the river is uncertain. This high platform provides access to a tower, which is listed along with the walls of the walled garden to the south of Cloister Hall, and may indicate the southern end of the former west wing.
Cloister Hall itself is a two-storey house with three windows, constructed from roughcast rubble stone and topped with a slate eaves roof and stone end stacks. It has 12-pane sash windows and a central six-panel door featuring four fielded panels. The double flight of steps leading up to the front door has been rebuilt since 1981. In front of the house, there is a low rubble garden wall that rises to the centre, where ashlar piers flank the steps. A similar pier is located to the right, and the wall continues as a retaining wall to the northeast corner of the outbuilding. There is a basement entrance to the undercrofts at the southern end, accessed by stone steps.
The outbuilding to the north is two-storey on the north side and west end, and one-storey on the south and east sides, built over the vaults. It is made of rubble stone with a slate roof and features a high rubble east stack. At the northeast angle, there is a small projecting structure that incorporates a gargoyle. The north side has a door leading to the vault and a window above it. The west front has a window above and a large flight of outside steps providing access to a footpath that runs between the building and the house. Beneath this footpath is a cartshed. The lower part of the outbuilding has not been inspected, but it is possibly vaulted.
Attached to the northwest angle of the outbuilding is a large stone Tudor-arched gateway leading to the yard, which may date from the early 19th century. This gateway features an inner rebate for doors and is located on the site of the College gateway marked on a 1720 map, with an inner segmental arch. Beyond this, there is a thinner and lower wall that extends to the riverbank at Cloister Bridge.
Behind the house, there are extensive remains of undercrofts associated with the crosswing, west wing, and service wing of the college. These are characterized by high rubble stone walls supporting a grassed terrace, with vaulted undercrofts beneath the crosswing and outside steps leading up. The undercrofts of the west wing and the range extending towards the river are not accessible.
This site is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, specifically noted for its undercrofts.
