Description
Capel Llwynrhydowen, also known as the Old Chapel, is a Unitarian chapel built in 1834. It is constructed from rubble stone and features a half-hipped slate roof with a scalloped timber eaves cornice. The tall front facade includes arched openings with cut stone voussoirs and keystones. There are two long central windows and two shorter outer windows, each positioned above three-panel doors that have fanlights. The windows are sashes with glazing bars, and slate sills are present. An oval slate plaque inscribed 'Llwynrhydowen 1834' is located under the eaves at the center.
Below the central windows, there are slate headstones commemorating Rev P Joseph, who died in 1857, Rev John Davies, who died in 1858, and a third headstone to the left for J Joseph, Wesyn, who died in 1863. The end walls of the chapel are plain, while the rear features two very long narrow windows with marginal bars and paired brackets supporting the flat timber eaves.
Inside, the chapel has an attractive interior with a panelled three-sided gallery that has Gothic moulding along the cornice. There are two cast iron columns and plain pews, along with a set fawr. The pulpit is accessed by baluster steps and is framed by twisted balusters, with a canted center that shares similar details with Brynteg Chapel in Llanwenog, built in 1838. It is noted that the chapel was renewed in 1862.
