Description

This is a police station, built in 1891 in a Tudor-gothic style, often used for public buildings in a country town setting. It is a symmetrical, two-storey building with three windows across the front, featuring a slightly projecting central gabled bay. The building is constructed from rock-faced stone with yellow sandstone dressings, topped with a slate roof and stone end stacks. Architectural details include sandstone quoins, a plinth, string course, raised copings on kneelers, and sandstone windows with chamfered mullions and transoms, containing iron casements with horizontal glazing bars.

The central bay provides the main entrance, which is a shallow 4-centred-arched doorway within a moulded sandstone surround. It incorporates a boarded door with strap hinges, flanked by narrow round-arched sidelights containing stained glass quarries. Above the entrance is a stepped moulded sandstone head with a tablet that reads 'County Constabulary 1891’. A tall, stepped gable projects through the eaves above, containing a cross-window with stained glass quarries in the upper lights. A sandstone panel near the top of the gable displays a roundel bearing a shield, with a ball finial at the apex. The outer bays feature cross-windows on the ground floor, with stained glass quarries to the upper lights, and 3-light mullioned casements on the first floor.

The east gable end has a single light to each storey to the right of the stack, mirroring the front elevation’s detailing. A gabled rear wing, with a similar window on its east side, is also present. A later flat-roofed block adjoins the southeast corner. To the west gable end is a single-storey flat-roofed block with a corbelled sandstone cornice. This block has a boarded door with strap hinges under a 5-pane overlight to the left, and a large fixed iron-glazed window to the right, both under flat sandstone lintels. A raised segmental pediment sits above the cornice in the centre.

A tall stone wall extends to the rear, beyond which is a further single-storey gabled range, oriented north-south. This range has a boarded door with a small-pane overlight on the west front and a 20th-century part-glazed window.

In front of the police station, low forecourt boundary walls are constructed of rock-faced stone and topped with chamfered sandstone copings. Simple iron railings with spear finials and scrollwork run along these walls. Gateways are provided at both entrances, featuring square piers with shaped capstones, each face displaying an arch over a circular boss. The gates are of a similar style with a lock rail and scrolled end posts. The railings return at right angles at the east end and connect to the northeast angle of the building. A snecked stone wall with triangular sandstone coping continues east along the roadside, incorporating a gateway that may have led to a former garden.

The interior of the building has not been inspected.
