Description
The White Rabbit Memorial is a statue depicting the White Rabbit, complete with a waistcoat, waistcoat pocket, and watch, set against a backdrop of a tree and rabbit-hole. It stands on a pedestal made of roughly hewn blocks of stone. The southern side of the pedestal features a tablet inscribed with a message that reads: "On this very shore/during happy rambles with/little Alice Liddell/Lewis Carrol/was inspired to write that/Literary treatise/"Alice in Wonderland"/ which has charmed children/for generations/unveiled by/The Rt Hon D Lloyd George OM MP Sept 6 1933". A squirrel is positioned at a top corner of the tablet, and a small frog or toad is located on a ledge lower down. The memorial has suffered damage, with the White Rabbit missing his left arm, ears, and bobtail. To protect it from vandalism, the monument has been enclosed in a steel cage.
