Description

The Midland Bank is a building constructed in white ashlar with a hipped slate roof and axial stacks, dating from the early 20th century. It stands two storeys tall and features a four-window range facing Conway Road, with a three-window return on Woodland Road West. The Conway Road elevation showcases five windows for the banking hall, which is enhanced by corbelled pilasters and a triglyph frieze. The Woodland Road West return has two windows, with the left window set in an advanced rectangular bay. The upper windows are adorned with brackets supporting entablature hoods, and on the Conway Road side, they are paired beside a raised panel displaying the bank's original name.

The entrance is located to the right of the return elevation, within a projecting porch topped by a steep pediment. It features a moulded round-arched doorway with a heavy scrolled bracket supporting the arch, and fluid low reliefs in the spandrels. Above, there is a balustraded parapet over a heavy projecting eaves cornice. Adjacent to the main building on Woodland Road West, there are two further blocks that are slightly recessed from the main building line. These blocks contain two-pane sash windows with moulded architraves on the first floor and wide windows on the ground floor, with a pediment and triglyph frieze above the left ground floor window. A cornice and blocking course complete the design.

Inside, the banking hall features an ornate ceiling that is deeply coved and divided by heavy ribs, embellished with low relief foliate swags. The wall panels include shields of arms and other relief decorations.
