Description

Felinrhyd-fawr is a two-storey, five-window farmhouse range built with mortared rubble masonry. The house was symmetrically planned and likely dates to the 18th century, with later alterations in the early 19th century. It has a modern hipped slate roof with wide bracketed eaves and a central gable over a small, horizontally sliding sash attic window. The ground floor has three-light windows, the first floor has two-light casement windows, with taller windows over the gabled porch at the centre of the facade. The quoins of the original three-bay front are still visible, along with the original diagonal corner beams. A rubble chimney is located on the right (west) gable end, and paired tall rubble stacks with weathercourses are at the rear of the main roof, likely related to the early 19th-century remodelling and used to heat the main rooms. The rear roof slopes asymmetrically, creating gable ends with similar casement windows, three widely spaced windows, and a modern small-pane window on the ground floor. A central boarded door leads down steps. A deep, full-height, whitewashed covered loading bay recedes from the right end of the house, stepping down from the rear yard and containing a staircase to a loft door and doorways leading to the kitchen and a service passage. A stone flagged yard sits at the rear.

Inside, the main door opens onto a central cross passage with a later balustrade staircase. The two main rooms on either side of the cross passage extend to the full depth of the house within the area covered by the hipped roof; the parlour to the right retains its fireplace and has stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, along with four-panel doors. This connects through to the kitchen at the right end. A transverse passage runs behind the fireplaces, connecting to a large dairy at the left end (containing slate slabs) and to the covered loading area on the right. Further service rooms are accessed from the far side of this passage, screened by a panelled timber partition with a timber barred ventilation band near the top. This returns to a broad rear door with boarded doors and timber latches. The first-floor room on the right has a beamed ceiling with added massive diagonal timbers, while the ceiling of the room to the left is plastered. Main fireplaces have been blocked; a Victorian iron fireplace is located at the right end. The rear of the house was once a full-length storage area, accessible at either end, but has since been converted into further accommodation and a passage created.
