Cefn Coed

Nos 7 - 14 Mawddwy Terrace in Minllyn, Dinas Mawddwy, is a terrace of eight workers' cottages built in the mountain-Gothic style using selected local slate laid on bed, topped with slate roofs. The two end cottages are bilaterally symmetrical and feature large gables that are slightly set forward to highlight the central cottages. Each cottage has a 4-paned half-glazed door with a plain overlight and 4-paned horned sash windows on both floors, all adorned with triangular heads made of shale voussoirs. The upper floor windows in the central cottages are set within five large raised gabled dormers. The design includes deep eaves supported by extended purlins and a ridge with shaped ends. Stone stacks are located on the party walls, featuring necking strings and outsetting heads. The large gable ends showcase decorative timber framing in the upper half. Internally, the partitions are said to be made of slate slabs set on end, an innovation attributed to Buckley and his architect, James Stephens. The southern half of the northern end gable cottage has 20th-century hardwood replacement windows. This terrace belongs to a group context of Nos 7-14 Mawddwy Terrace.
