Description
The entrance gateway to Rhiwlas is designed in the Castellated Gothic style and features flanking railed screen sections. Constructed from dressed limestone, the gateway includes a pointed-arched entrance situated between two octagonal turrets. The arch is slightly recessed beneath a segmental arch that has blind shields in its spandrels, topped with a faux-machicolated and crenellated parapet. The turrets rise above the central arch and are similarly castellated, each displaying blind slit-lights on two stages at the front and rear, as well as a chamfered plinth. Originally, the gates were wooden but were replaced in the mid-20th century with 19th-century cast iron gothic gates. The screen sections consist of simple cast iron spear-headed railings mounted on a chamfered stone plinth, with plain terminating piers at both ends; the inner piers abut the gateway and feature sloped copings.
